State Bank of India: IFSC code
Updated : May 30, 2018, 02.53 PM IST
The Indian Financial System Code (or IFSC) is an 11-digit alpha-numeric code assigned by the Reserve Bank of India to identify every bank branch participating in the payment system uniquely. This code is used by electronic payment system applications such as RTGS, and NEFT. It is mandatory for fund transfers from one bank account to another. Every bank branch will have a unique code and no two branches (even of the same bank) will ever be the same.
For State Bank of India's (SBI) 11-digit IFSC code, the first four letters will be 'SBIN', and the last 6 digits will represent a specific branch code. For example, the IFSC code of the SBI branch at 23, Himalaya House, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi 110001, is SBIN0005943. Here, 005943 is the branch code.
According to the bank's annual report for the fiscal 2016-17, it has a customer base of more than 33.75 crore, 59, 263 PAN-India ATMs, and 3.27 crore Internet banking users.
In April 2017, SBI merged with five of its associate banks (State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Travancore), and Bharatiya Mahila Bank. After this merger, SBI became one of the 50 largest banks in the world. After the merger, SBI revised IFSC codes of some of its branches that were part of the merger. As part of this process the bank updated the financial system code of around 1,300 branches.
